Today was #ironman703oceanside. I can say without hesitation that this was an absolutely amazing #race. The course is great (that #bike is a lot harder than I thought), and the volunteers and crowd support on the #run is incredible. As for the #swim, well it happens first. . Unfortunately for me, I had a terrible day. I had a really hard time during the swim, mainly because I struggled with the waves and getting through the breakers. My anxiety level was high, and I had a hard time controlling my heart rate. I almost quit several times before the first buoy, and throughout the remainder of the swim, but what got me through it was thinking of all of the support that people have given and continue to give me. I truly couldn’t have gotten through this without you. . As for the bike, everything that could’ve gone wrong went wrong. Yesterday, after swapping out my rear wheel, my bike was working perfectly. Today, my front wheel was rubbing hard against the brake from the start and nothing I did helped. I eventually resigned myself to ride with basically one brake on. Then I found out that my front derailleur wouldn’t shift my chain from the small chainring to the large chainring. In order for me to shift it, I had to stop, get off the bike, and manually adjust my chain. To top that all off, I started to overheat in my helmet. One that I’ve worn to several races, including #ironman703puertorico, and has never given me any issues. Finally, my legs just had nothing in them today. I couldn’t generate any power and I really struggled. At every aid station I passed, I thought about quitting. . On the run, surprisingly my legs moved well. I felt like absolute 💩, but I could run. So I did. I ran angry and I ran every step of that 13.8 (yeah, the run course was long) miles to get to that finish line. . None of these are excuses as to why I had a bad day. They’re just what happened, and it just wasn’t meant to be for me today. It’s ok. I’ll get over this (eventually). And I’ll race again. . Well, it’s almost go time. Tomorrow is my first #race of the season, #ironman703oceanside. It looks like tomorrow’s going to be a beautiful day, with a #beach start #swim and a beautiful but challenging #bike (~2700 ft of climbing), followed by a relatively flat #run. A few folks have asked what my goals are for this race, and to be honest, I don’t have too many. It’s still early in the season and I’m still not at the level of fitness and form I want to be in (nor am I in race weight - my @wynrepublic kit is definitely #sexysnug). So, my goals are simple: have a strong, calm, and panic-free 🏊🏼‍♂️, enjoy the 🚴🏽‍♂️, and 🏃🏽‍♂️ faster than I ride. I’m lucky enough to be healthy and to be able to participate in the sport I love, with a whole heck of a lot of people here with me to share in the experience. So, don’t expect any 🎇🎆💥 from my times tomorrow but it will be a great day regardless. Thank you to all of those who have supported me, especially @ablo319 and @lexie.lombardi. There’s no way I could do this alone, it truly does take a village. Thank you to my coach for getting me to this point, and for believing in me and supporting me this season. Thank you to my XC family, the camaraderie and friendships I’ve gained from being a part of XC is immeasurable. And thank you to all of my friends who have sent messages of support.
